FAQs

Common questions about lawn care

How often should I have my lawn mowed?

For most Louisiana properties, weekly mowing during the active growing season (March through October) keeps the lawn healthy and looking sharp. During the cooler months, bi-weekly service is usually sufficient.

The right cutting height matters as much as the schedule. Cutting too short stresses the grass and invites weeds; cutting too tall makes the property look unkempt. SOTE crews use the right blade height for your specific grass type — typically 3 to 3.5 inches for St. Augustine and 1.5 to 2 inches for Bermuda — and we never remove more than one-third of the leaf at a time.

What's the difference between fertilization and weed control?

Fertilization feeds the grass with nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) to encourage healthy growth, color, and density. Weed control prevents or kills unwanted plants competing with your turf for water and nutrients. Both are essential for a healthy lawn, and they work together.

SOTE offers seasonal fertilization programs calibrated for Louisiana climates, paired with pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control treatments timed to the right windows in the year. Treating these as a coordinated program produces dramatically better results than handling them piecemeal.

When should I aerate my lawn?

Annual aeration is recommended for most Northshore properties. The best timing depends on your grass type:

  • Warm-season grasses (St. Augustine, Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede): late spring to early summer when the grass is actively growing
  • Cool-season grasses: early fall

Aeration relieves soil compaction, improves water and nutrient absorption, and stimulates new root growth. Heavily compacted soils, high-traffic areas, or properties with drainage issues may benefit from twice-yearly aeration. SOTE pairs aeration with overseeding when appropriate to thicken thin lawns.
